About that SOTU response by Rubio…

You know, I don’t begrudge the guy a drink of water if he’s thirsty, but… I am constantly stunned by how crappy the setups are for SOTU responses. It’s not just that they put the water 10 feet away, causing him to lunge, it’s that they put the poor guy in a dark empty room — a horrible contrast to the President, who’s standing in front of several hundred wildly applauding prominent adults.

And yet, both parties do this same absurd setup nearly every time. I do remember one SOTU response where a governor (I think?) spoke in front of members of his state assembly. Which made it look much more like an actual SOTU speech. Which make it not suck.

Imagine if Rubio had given his speech from a podium, to a group that was applauding every line. Is there any doubt that it would’ve been far more powerful?
